The Overview team is:

Jonathan Stray – Project lead. Jonathan began his career in computer science and moved into journalism. He was a computer scientist for Adobe Systems, then the Interactive Technology Editor for the Associated Press. He has written code for After Effects and Flash and contributed stories to Foreign Policy, the New York Times, and Wired. He currently teaches the computational journalism course at Columbia University. He has an MSc. in Computer Science from the University of Toronto and a Master of Journalism from the University of Hong Kong.

Jonas Karlsson – Lead developer. Before joining the Overview Project, Jonas Karlsson was a Senior Researcher at the Xerox Research Center Webster in Rochester, NY. His work included applying game design elements to enterprise applications and creating collaboration tools in 3D immersive virtual environments. Jonas has a Ph.D. and MS in Computer Science from the University of Rochester, and a  BS in Computer Science from Stanford University.

Adam Hooper – Front end developer. Bred a software engineer, Adam Hooper entered journalism to decipher the world. So far, he’s dispersed sexuality-awareness magazines in Tanzania, pursued politicians in Rwanda and helped kick off Patch, an AOL venture that launched thousands of community news websites. He has photographed for the Associated Press and written stories for the Canadian Press. He devotes most of his working time to making Overview as powerful and easy-to-use as possible. During his downtime, he creates award-winning interactive news visualizations for outlets such as the Montreal Gazette, the Toronto Star, and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

We are grateful to be advised by a talented team of experts:

Tamara Munzner – Tamara is a Professor at the University of British Columbia Department of Computer Science.  She has provided important advice and support to the project as a visualization professional.

Shelia Coronel – Shelia is the director of the Stabile Center for Investigative Journalism at Columbia University. She brings us all her most difficult real-world problems and connects Overview with journalists who could use our help.

Matthew Brehmer has conducted an extensive field evaluation of Overview with our journalist users.

Thanks to Stephen Ingram who wrote much of the prototype GUI and designed several critical algorithms, including Glimmer.
